چکیده

The successful adaptation of the duck (Anas platyrhynchos) to a diet containing hypertonic saline as drinking water involves many complex changes in the excretory mechanisms of the bird (Fletcher & Holmes, 1968; Fletcher, Stainer & Holmes, 1967; Holmes, Fletcher & Stewart, 1968; Holmes & Stewart, 1968). These changes include modifications of the renal excretory pattern such that at least part of the increased electrolyte intake of the bird may be excreted via this pathway. The concentrating capacity of the nephron of the bird is limited when compared with that of the mammal, and a considerable portion of the osmotic space in the hypertonic urine produced by the saline-adapted bird is occupied by nitrogenous compounds. The purpose of the present investigation, therefore, was to determine the pattern of excretion of nitrogenous compounds in the urine of the freshwater-adapted and of the saline-adapted duck under conditions of controlled food intake.

The patterns of renal electrolyte excretion in the duck (Anas platyrhynchos) maintained on freshwater and on hypertonic saline.

In mammals and many terrestrial birds the kidney appears to be the major pathway for the excretion of nitrogenous waste products and excess electrolytes. Thus when these animals are presented with varying concentrations of sodium chloride in their drinking water the tonicity of the excreted urine varies commensurately (Barker & Adolph, 1953; Wolf, Prentiss, Douglas & Swett, 1959; Poulson & Bart...

Malignant Melanoma in a Female Mallard Duck (Anas platyrhynchos)

Melanomas are malignant neoplasms originating from melanocytes. They reported in birds.  In this  case, macroscopic and microscopic (the histopathologic and IHC) findings supported a final diagnosis  of cutaneous malignant melanoma in a mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos). A female mallard duck  (Anas platyrhynchos) was observed with a mass on the ventral portion of the neck. Th...

Changes in the nucleic acid and protein composition of the nasal glands from the duck (Anas platyrhynchos) during the period of adaptation to hypertonic saline.

The early observations of Heinroth & Heinroth (1927) established that the nasal glands in the marine eider duck (Somateria mollisima) were reduced in size when the birds were given fresh water. These experiments were later confirmed in the domestic duck and the glaucous-winged gull, LOTUS glaucescens, (Schildmacher, 1932; Holmes, Butler & Phillips, 1961; Holmes, Phillips & Chester Jones, 1963)....

Genetic Diversity and Phylogenetic Analysis of South-East Asian Duck Populations Based on the mtDNA D-loop Sequences

The maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) D-loop region is widely used for exploring genetic relationships and for investigating the origin of various animal species. Currently, domestic ducks play an important role in animal protein supply. In this study, partial mtDNA D-loop sequences were obtained from 145 samples belonging to six South-East Asian duck populations and commercial duc...

Role of plasma ANG II in the excretion of acute sodium load in a bird with salt glands (Anas platyrhynchos).

This study was designed to further examine the role of plasma ANG II in the excretion of sodium in the Pekin duck, a bird with salt glands. Renal and extrarenal (salt gland) excretion of an intravenously administered isotonic saline load was monitored over a 4-h period in a group of eight birds under two conditions: the control condition, in which isotonic saline infusion decreased endogenous p...
